She was taking an inordinate amount of time to get down here, the first years were usually quick. Footsteps sounded and she wandered down the steps. She was wearing a jumper, the one that Daphne always called her frumpyjumpy when she thought that no one was listening, and her uniform skirt. A sure sign that she was in a downer mood. Well, I was there to cheer her up.

"Hallo." She said wearily, sitting down on the steps above me. I looked up to her and smiled.

"Hello, Happy Birthday." I grinned at her. She just sat there, staring at me, her chin on her crossed arms.

"What?" She asked, blinking, and for a moment, I thought that maybe I had gotten the date wrong when I wrote it down.

"It is your birthday, right?" I asked, desperate. She looked at me oddly still, not blinking.

"How did you know?" She sounded bewildered. I relaxed, I hadn't messed up the date after all. "I didn't tell anyone..."

"Madame Pomfrey. Its amazing what you can get out of her if you smile enough. I think it unnerves her." I was still smiling uncertainly at her. She didn't seem to be taking this too well. "You're sixteen right?" My smile by now, was dipping down at the ends, she was still staring at me.

"Yeah." Her voice was soft and she hadn't blinked from when she first looked me the eyes. I could feel a blush rising, flushing my neck.

"So, erm. I got you something. Well, I kind of made it but I'm not sure that you'd like it and-" And I'm babbling like an idiot. Hello, my name is Very Uncomfortable, but most people call me Theodore. I thrust the thin package at her, it was a plain manilla envelope, but it had a moving picture of her, in a cartoonish style blowing out the candles on a birthday cake. She smiled at the picture, a small, sad smile, but it was a smile nonetheless. She opened the envelope and pulled out two pictures, both of them moving like the cartoon on the cover, but these were much better drawn. One was me, a self portrait, something for her to keep and smile at the times that we weren't in the library. I missed her terribly when we weren't together and I could only hope that she felt the same way. The other picture was of her. Creating a moving picture wasn't quite as easy as I had hoped and I had poured hours into this picture. It was actually thousands of smaller pictures that made up the moving picture. Developed in a special solution, all the pictures melded together to form a semi concious whole. I had studied extra in the library and spent a lot of quality time with Flitwick to make it. She was staring at it, fascinated.

"And watch, this is the best bit." I took the pictures out of her hands and placed them side by side on the wall. I pressed my thumb down the seam between the two pictures and the two melted together to form a single, long picture. The picture Theodore tapped the picture Tracy on her shoulder and she turned around, her eyes lighting up. The real Tracy turned to look at me, her face inscrutable. I placed the picture in her hands and showed her how to undo it. Tracy and Theodore went back to their respective frames reluctantly, it took a bit of prodding to get them back on their own sides of the paper. She took the papers with shaking hands and put them back in the package, she then placed the package before her. She stood up.

The next thing I knew, my arms were full of frumpy jumper as a very warm girl launched herself into them. Her face was buried in my neck and her arms tight. I stood for a moment, not entirely sure what to do. I vaguely brought my arms up and held her, patting her head awkwardly. She began to cry. Now I was a wet, confused and, unfortunetly, blushing boy. Its a good thing there was no one in the Comman room.

"No one's ever remembered my birthday." She mumbled, talking through her tears. I held her out at arms length to smile at her, but thats as far as I got.

Later I would suspect that I made the first move, but when he held me out at arms length to look at me to, tell me something Gryffindoltish to be sure, suddenly I wasn't at arms length any more. His mouth was on mine and he was kissing me just as much as I was kissing him. He kissed the tears off of my cheeks and then went back to kissing my mouth, but now it was salty. I almost giggled. His kisses were sweet and salty at the same time, but ever so soft and I felt myself melt. Yup, a right ole puddle of goo, that was me. He gave a happy little sigh and distangled himself. Then threw back his head and laughed.

"What?" I asked, almost waspishly. Here, he had kissed me for the first time and he was laughing at me. Again. He finally stopped to catch a breath.

"Tracy, if I would have known that kissing you was going to be that wonderful, then I would have done it to shut you up ages ago." I felt indignant rage rising up from somewhere within me.  I could NOT believe that he just said that to me! Then he leaned down and kissed me again and I realized that he was probably trying to compliment me in some off hand guy-speak that I didn't understand.

"I happen to like the fact that I can talk about anything to you and yet, nothing ever gets said." I said indignantly. I liked that emotion. Indignation. It fit me and Theodore very well. "The witty banter is quite relaxing."

"It truely is dizzying." Theodore said, laughing at me. Strange, now that I think about it, I had Daphne, but Theodore never really had anyone. Merlin knew that the two of us were truely the Slytherin outcasts. Alone was always better with someone else.  I knew that we would have a debt to pay sometime, for living amoung these people, but hopefully, we could pay each other's debts together. He tucked me under his arm. "We should go steal a feather from the Ravenclaw cap and go kiss amoung the bookshelves."

"I've got a better idea."

"Really?"

"Think the boxers fiasco, only bigger." I paused to grin. "Much bigger." He pulled me out of the empty comman room, laughing.
